An APP to address Parking Menace!

Recently I watched a video which was recorded in a posh colony in New Delhi where a severe altercation was going on between two gentlemen. One was the Bangalow owner, in front of whose house, the other gentlemen had parked his car for few hours. Bangalow owner could not remove his car because of that and he missed an important appointment. Huge crowds had gathered to enjoy this altercation along with some policemen. This is not an unusual scenario, it is quite a common sight particularly in Metros, where parking places are limited and car numbers alarming.

While strolling on the streets of Delhi, mostly South Delhi, we find a humongous number of cars parked which cover major areas of the roads. Imagine, if through some magic, if these cars disappeared then how many open spaces would be left for citizens to walk. We would be able to assess how much space our capital actually can offer. With a population of over 1 crore vehicles, Delhi is completely choc-o-bloc with vehicles.

Around 7.5 lakh new vehicles are registered daily in Delhi. The number is quite staggering. People have not comprehended the grave intensity of this problem and it is escalating with every passing day. Brawls over parking have become so common that over 250 calls are made to Delhi Police every day regarding this matter. So besides maintaining law and order conditions in Delhi, police have the additional job of handling parking altercations/ brawl which has become the norm.

Every single day Delhi police receive close to 250 calls on their helpline number about disputes triggered by fights over parking space. The non-availability of parking space in residential areas and busy markets is the prime reason behind quarrels related to parking, and the other major reason that leads to such tiffs is lack of tolerance and anger management issues. It is the need of the hour that these issues are tackled properly and on priority.

There is no methodology followed to provide ease of parking. People park wherever they get the space, causing inconvenience to citizens. And this is not only in India but the world over parking space is a serious issue, though scenario there is way better than our cities.

One of the solutions to provide ease of parking could be “Book-my-Parking” in advance through an App that would book a parking slot for you in advance and you can peacefully park your vehicle there. Unimaginable? Maybe, maybe not! It is a possibility with just downloading an App and you are on the go.

This would lead to revenue generation in a transparent manner for Government and leading to unlocking of land which could be made available for parking. Thus leading to a win-win situation for all the stakeholders.
